How was life back then? "Nasty, brutish, and short!"
At least, from our perspectives. The poor devils at that time really didn't have a great deal to compare it with, other than dreams of heaven and fears of hellfire.....
If you'd like some great reads on daily life within the "middle ages" (and this covers a huge span!), check with your local librarian (the Not-so-Secret Master of the Universe---librarians control information!) for books on social history in this timespan. Look for titles like "Life in ____ Days".
Here's a couple wonderful ones, to get you started, though:
Davis, William Stearns. _Life in a Medieval Barony_ and also _Life in Elizabethan Days_. Written originally as middle-school/high school history texts, these are highly readable and REALLY good overall introductory books.
Anything by Frances and Joseph Gies. They have a number of books on different aspects of medieval life and technology.
Eileen Power. _Medieval People_. Still a classic; you'll probably hit it as recommended reading in HS or college. A collection of short essays. Also, if you can get any of her other works (like _Medieval Women_)GO FOR IT!
Have fun---social history is absolutely fascinating, once you dive into it!

Better than now, being old sucks>
But seriously;
no running water,no clean water, Smokey buildings, Lice, Fleas, Disease, Witches everywhere, Black Plague, no Medicine, Wars, Tied to the land as serfs, People counted as property, no free speech, no reading, no writing, no TV,The Lord of your Manor could kill you at a whim, if none of the above got you the Church might kill you as a witch or heretic, No proper food because no refridgeration, backbreaking labour.
Most people just gave up and died at about 40 years.
