Well, that kind of data might be able to be found on the US Department of Labor's website under a historical table section, but I might try to google up what minimum wages were back then, as a gas jockey job was probably a minimum wage kind of job.

Also, it depends on what State or regions of the USA we are talking about. NE USA and urban areas of the West coast had a lot higher wages then the deep South for instance.

Such jobs were usually done by young people and they were non-Union type jobs, and usually they only paid minimum wage.

That being said, minimum wage in circa 1971 or 1972 was 1.75 per hour if my Mom is correct.

As for Tollbooth workers, they usually worked for the State and were probably Unionized and were probably paid a lot more than minimum wage, even if their jobs did not demand a whole lot. Of course, they have to deal with all those fumes, and occasional weird people and being in the heat and cold to some degree.

I will take a wild stab at this and guess that a typical Tollbooth worker might have made around 5.00 an hour circa 1970, and if the minimum wage was around 1.75 an hour, that was not too bad a wage for then.

Hope that helped.

I worked at several stations back when I was in high school and college (77 - 83). These jobs were essentially minimum wage jobs with the exception being with those of us who did mechanic work as well. If all the job required was pumping gas, checking oil, checking tires, etc. then minimum wage was all that was paid.

You can research the minimum wage levels during the years in question but I suspect it was around $3.75 or so.

Hope this helps!

I worked in various gas stations from 1965 to 1970. Hourly rates ranged from $3.50 to $5.50.
