Seems you can book a flight for someone else using your air mile account only.

This joyous paragraph from http://www.airmiles.co.uk/tertiary/tsandcs.do;jsessionid=G9NLQT46ZHbkynnTjVG4Kn9D4TzLv6Td1qYBjJNJ5T2pv0TcV9KF!1288299639

4. Using Airmiles

a. When miles have appeared on your account, you can spend them by booking our exclusive offers. Your first choice of one of our offers may not always be available so please have alternative offers in mind. Please do not make any related arrangements until we have confirmed the offer you are booking.
b. You may use your miles for anyone as long as you, the account holder, contact us to make the booking. You may use miles for up to nine people in any one booking.
c. You cannot transfer, sell or use miles for any other purpose except as we allow under the terms of any offer. If you die, miles may be transferred to an account in the name of one of your beneficiaries. We must be shown a copy of the will and the death certificate. If you try to transfer miles in any other way, we may take action against you.
