i just had someone clean my house.. my house is 1300 sq ft.. 3 bed 2 bath.. i had him do only basic cleaning, and he charged me $55.. this is an individual doing this as a business, not a big company.. it is normal to give a set price instead of by the hour..

This question requres more information. Where exactly are you cleaning houses (country and city). I live in New York and I have been cleaing houses for about 25 years. I do not charge by the hour, because there are days that I am very fast. Besides if you explain to people that you clean based upon the job, not time you won't be milking their money by being excessively slow.
Secondly, considerations to take into account when estimating a job is whether they have a contemporary or traditional decor. Contemp usually means less knick-knacks as opposed to the more traditional decor. Also, do they have pets? My price increases 15% automatically if they have cats or dogs. 25% if they have more than one dog. And then there is the subject of children and exactly how much is expected of you when it comes to the children. (i.e. small children and whether they expect you to pick up toys which can add at least 20 minutes per room) or teenagers that have clothes strewn about the room. Also number of bathrooms and the degree of dirt in said bathrooms. Do they have a hand held shower to make rinsing easier and thereby make the time go more quickly. Based upon these things my prices range from approximately $60 for a one bedroom to $130 for a three bdrm depending on the number of ancillary rooms (i.e. office, den...)
You must also take into consideration the frequency of which you will be cleaning the house. A house that you are cleaning weekly will be less than a house you clean every two weeks.
Hope this helps. Also, don't just do this job for the money (though the money is quite good) make sure that you enjoy cleaning because it will show in your work. If you only do this for the money...it gives a bad name for those of us that really do a good job. All of my clients have had me for quite some time and they offer me raises before I even ask.

You need to bid by the job and not the hour. Explain the first time you clean it will be more because it will take you longer. People like to know exactly how much they are going to have to pay a housekeeper so they can budget it in.

It depends on how many rooms the house is.
Usually if it is a one time deal for each room is about 25.00.
So there you have made 75.00 just on the kitchen, livingroom, and restroom.
And 25.00 for each room.
If it is a daily basis and you want to charge a week,
the you might go with the 12.00 an hour thing.
Good Luck.
