you can use it to preserve flowers/leaves
get an air-tight container ie.tupperware.
layer silica and flowers ( make sure items to be dried don't touch) can take up to 8 weeks depending on thickness

They used to use it in ash trays in public areas. I don't think they do anymore. It is also used for sandblasting.
