Because they feel it is the only thing that will identify them to someone else. Because they are insecure about how the world views them. Because sex sells. Because national media promotes sexy as the only way to be. Sex even as just a word will turn more heads than not. Even if it is morbid fascination, people will read things with sex in it before, say, puppies.
And because I'm damn fine and you know it.

Besides the things mentioned above, I think people who brag about anything, sex life, car, whatever, are rather shallow and can't think of anything else to discuss.

Being someone who doesn't do it I can't really say for certain. Maybe they feel inadequate in some way and are trying to make up for it. Maybe they don't see sex in the same way and don't really make a "connection" but see it as a competition.
