cdrws use differnt types of crystles inside the film layer which lasers can not penitrate as deep as they can on regular cd-rs which makes them able to get erased by a special laser (yer cd burner will have to support cd-rw burning because it uses a differnt type of laser to burn data onto the disc

CD/R = read only. Software comes on CD/Rs.
CD/RW = read/write
You can open, copy paste. It can be used on your PC.

I have two burners - a Dell and a Samsung. Both require that a CD/RW be formatted with software that drives their burners, before they can be used to RW.

Additionally, at least with mine, you cannot read it on another PC unless the other PC has their particular "reading" program which you have to download.

If you plan to use these as a backup, I suggest you go to flashdrives. So much easier, transportable, and work like a floppy. Some allow you to set a password to open. If you intend to take it out of the house, you might want to consider getting this kind.
