2-3tbsp of baby food twice a day is what is recommended.Every baby is different though & will eat different. My son would eat 2jars at this age.Your baby may eat that amount or less. You should atart with stage 1 & only give the same thing for a few days to make sure he/she does'nt have an allergic reaction. After he/she gets used to stage 1 about 3-4weeks he will probably be ready for stage2.Stage 2 & 3 is lumpier & different texture.Stage 3 has food pieces in it so what until your baby can chew a little. My now 15mth old never would eat 3.He went from 2 to table food & i kept him on mostly baby food until 11-12mths.

Pediatric Society (American and Canadian) recommend that you do not start solids until the age of 6 months........but if you child displays any of the following below.....they may be ready to eat some solid foods........which is ONLY Cereals.........rice to start.
Age: Birth to 4 months------------
Feeding behavior
• Rooting reflex helps your baby turn toward a nipple to find nourishment
What to feed
• Breast milk or formula ONLY •
Your baby's digestive tract is still developing, which is why solid food is off limits for now.
From 4-6 months------------
Signs of readiness for solid food
Your baby probably won't do all these things — they're just clues to watch for.
• Can hold head up
• Sits well in highchair
• Makes chewing motions
• Shows significant weight gain (birth weight has doubled)
• Shows interest in food
• Can close mouth around a spoon
• Can move food from front to back of mouth
• Can move tongue back and forth, but is losing tendency to push food out with tongue
• Seems hungry after 8 to 10 feedings of breast milk or 40 oz. of formula in a day
• Is teething
What to feed
• Breast milk or formula, PLUS
• Semi-liquid iron-fortified rice cereal, THEN
• Other grain cereals like oats or barley

A 6 mos old should just be starting solids.
Bananas, avocados and sweet potatoes are good first foods that most babies like.
Very small quantities of solids. Breastmilk or formula should still make up most of his diet at this age. Solids are mostly for fun and practice right now.

I have a 9 month old who I started on solids at 5 months and he is absolutely fine, but stay away from avocados (too much fat for a little one) and also stay away from citrus, milk and broccoli (it will cause gas for their little tummy)
My son gets an 8 ounce bottle in the morning and then usually a fruit (Gerber stage 2) mixed with organic Gerber oatmeal and that is breakfast, at lunch he gets another 8 ounce bottle and then 1/2 a Gerber fruit and vegetable, that also is his dinner menu, but I usually do 2 vegetable at dinner.
With them growing so fast though if he seems hungry then feed on demand still www.baby.com can also help answer questions. Good Luck!!

I had this same question when my now 13 yr son was born. I had no clue of what to feed him, or when.
I called Gerber. And asked them how I'm supposed to know what & when to feed him? They sent me a feeding plan, with even menu planners. I have used Gerber for all of my 5 children, and will continue to use their baby food for my twins.
I checked their website, they have online menu planners.
http://www.gerber.com Click on the "Start healthy, stay healthy" link on the left. I looked up independent sitters (6 months) and got this menu planner. There's a few for each baby group.
http://www.gerber.com/fpmenu?phase=21&menuid=menu1
I also found that my kids' pediatrician has a sample menu planner from Gerber, and I made copies for my nieces. Kept one for when I'm going to need it again. Even though I've had kids before, some things are impossible to remember to a T. Or you can call Gerber directly, and ask for it. 1-800-4-GERBER. If you plan on using other baby products, look up each website and see if they have something similar. Or just use Gerber's plan scenario with your own kind of baby food.

I posted this site on another question as well. This site really help. It gave me a lot of ideas. It doesn't have to be followed directly because each baby is different. Here is a sample menu.
