Actually I believe it was the Bristish that invented ice hockey. British soldiers that were stationed in Canada.

Hockey was not invented, it just sort of evolved. Although Canada is generally credited with being the birthplace of the modern game, hockey has its roots in a number of games which were popular in other countries. For example there are carvings which show the Greeks playing a version of hockey as far back as 500 B.C. French explorers reported seeing Indians playing a game similar to hockey in 1740. In the 17th century an Ice Game known as "Kolven" was popular in Holland. An 1862 London newspaper article refers to a game of ice hockey that was played in England. Some form of field or ice hockey has been played for years in many countries, however it is generally accepted that the game was refined or evolved over the years in Canada.
