It had to do with the waning and waxing of the moon and how you could tell if it was waning or waxing depending on which side was dark.
something like "right waning left waxing" but that's not it, because it sort of rhymed or had alliteration.. hmm.. thanks

For an observer in the northern hemisphere:

Dark Moon: Not visible
Waxing Crescent Moon: Right 1-49% visible
First Quarter Moon: Right 50% visible
Waxing Gibbous Moon: Right 51-99% visible
Full Moon: Fully visible
Waning Gibbous Moon: Left 51-99% visible
Third Quarter Moon: Left 50% visible
Waning Crescent Moon: Left 1-49% visible
New Moon: Not visible

An observer in the southern hemisphere will see the opposite of the above.

But the acronym I think you are looking for is: "DOC" ("D" is the waxing Moon, "O" the Full Moon, and "C" the waning Moon).

If you see a partial moon, draw a line along the division of light and dark. If the line and the lighted half forms a P, think premier and you are looking at the first quarter.

I don't know any saying, but if the Moon rises before midnight, it is waxing, if it rises after midnight it is waning.
