Breastmilk or formula.
No solids prior to approx 6 mos of age. Starting earlier can increase the risk of allergies, diabetes and obesity.

Pediatric Society (American and Canadian) recommend that you do not start solids until the age of 6 months........but if you child displays any of the following below.....they may be ready to eat some solid foods........which is ONLY Cereals.........rice to start.

Don't be in a rush to start your child on solid foods....you will have a TON of opportinuty to do so.......

Age: Birth to 4 months------------
Feeding behavior
• Rooting reflex helps your baby turn toward a nipple to find nourishment
What to feed
• Breast milk or formula ONLY •
Your baby's digestive tract is still developing, which is why solid food is off limits for now.

From 4-6 months------------
Signs of readiness for solid food
Your baby probably won't do all these things — they're just clues to watch for.
• Can hold head up
• Sits well in highchair
• Makes chewing motions
• Shows significant weight gain (birth weight has doubled)
• Shows interest in food
• Can close mouth around a spoon
• Can move food from front to back of mouth
• Can move tongue back and forth, but is losing tendency to push food out with tongue
• Seems hungry after 8 to 10 feedings of breast milk or 40 oz. of formula in a day
• Is teething
What to feed
• Breast milk or formula, PLUS
• Semi-liquid iron-fortified rice cereal, THEN
• Other grain cereals like oats or barley

You can start on cereal, first rice then oatmeal and barley, to begin you need to mix one teaspoon of cereal per oz of breastmilk or formula, then you can start to make it thicker. You need to consult with your pediatrician first, depending of the child you might also start with stage 1 foods, vegetables first and then fruit; thats so they dont get used to the sweetness of fruit and then reject vegetables altogether. Just remeber to introduce foods one at a time so you can see if the baby develops allergies. Try a certain food for 3 days in a row, if the baby is prone to allergies 5 days is better, if there's nothing wrong and he digests the food well then you may continue with a different type of cereal or stage 1 food.
Just remember that breastmilk or formula is the most important food for your baby right now and will be until 1 year of age.
If your baby doesn't accept the cereal right away don't be discouraged, just try again in a few weeks.
My son vomited every time I gave him cereal so I started on stage 1 foods first and introduced cereal later on. He was finally able to digest cereal at 9 months!
Good Luck!

You can start a 4 month old on solids, but you can also wait until 5 or 6 months. It's up to you.

Breast milk or formula. Ignore the people that say cereal. Thats what old women and people that dont know better think. The American Society of Pediatrics says that babies shoudl be on breast milk or formula for a minimum of 6 months, and that if you can go until 1 year, that is even better, as it help preserve the "virgin gut" of the infant.

I work with babies on a dialy basis as well as i am a mom. I think at 4 mos old you should be putting them on babyfood.. Some cereal in the morning and stage one babyfoods in the evening. Not only will this help them grow but it will give you a better nights sleep if your baby is full and happy at night they will sleep better. Parents who dont feed there kids at this age tend to have a picky baby when the start to eat foods

Besides formula or breast milk, cereal is acceptable. When my son was 4-5 months old, I would take a real banana and mash it up withhis cereal. He loved it. You can try really mild soft foods too. Sweet potatos, bananas, pears, applesauce. All of those things are completely acceptable.

formula or breast milk

some people mix (a little bit) of rice cereal with it for evening feeding to help keep baby to sleep. But just a little bit.

We have two kids.
We had given only mother feed to them up to say 06 or 07 months.
Then we slowly started complementary food meant for babies.
Our doctor had advised not to give even water up to this time.
