You're gonna want hard wearing clothes, that you possibly don't mind getting grubby; its gonna be dusty out there. Oh, and don't wear anything white, because you will never get it clean again (I had to throw out all my white clothes when I came back the first time!!)
Ususally safaris start early in the morning and it is quite chilly so you will more than likely want long trousers. However, it will get warm quickly. I found wearing a thin pair of shorts under jeans to start with, so that you can remove the jeans when you get too hot, or invest in a pair of those trousers that have zips around the thigh allowing you to take the bottom portion of the trousers off.
If you burn easily I would recomend t-shirts that cover your shoulders as you can be sitting in the sun for along time and can burn literally in minutes. A hat is a good idea too to fend of sun storke (though agree with the point abut no zebra stripped hats!!).
A good sweater or a fleece is also pretty essential. Again go for layers as the tempretures can go from one extrme to the other.
Long sleeves and trousers are good at nighttime to try to prevent you getting bitten by mossies.
As for your beach holiday I'll just say beach wear, but bare in mind that if you are going to visit towns etc, its not polite to wander around in a swim suit.
Oh, and not part of your question, but if you have time in Nairobi, make sure you visit a resturant called Carnivores. They do game meat in an amazing atmosphere. A really great night out. I love it there.
Happy travels.

Jan/Feb is Kenya's summer so it's going to be hot. For details on climate in Kenya, see http://kenya-safari-wildlife.blogspot.com/2006/03/kenya-climate.html
What to wear checklist:
On safari:
loose cotton clothes (or other cool light fabric that doesn't make you sweat) t-shirts, shorts and a sweater for early morning/evening game drives when it's colder
sunglasses
hat
sun block (factor 35 plus)
eye drops! (find out why here http://kenya-safari-wildlife.blogspot.com/2005/11/kenya-holiday-health.html)
Beach:
It's hot and humid on coast see http://kenya-safari-wildlife.blogspot.com/2006/03/kenya-climate.html
Same clothes as above, along with the obvious swim wear etc. Remember, Kenya is mainly Muslim so be discreet when walking around - cover the shoulders and wear some 'long' shorts/skirt. Otherwise, it's normal beach wear.
Mosquito repellent is a must on the coast and a mosquito net over your bed is advisable see http://kenya-safari-wildlife.blogspot.com/2005/11/kenya-holiday-health.html for other things to watch to for.
Have a blast!

I should think that a suitable wardrobe for Africa (if you have to take one at all, they can be rather cumbersome, and airlines are very strict about excess baggage these days) would be something fairly light in an african whicker effect. This would be easy to carry with you on safari. If you also have a five day beach extension, then don't forget to make sure that your wardrobe has waterproof feet - you don;t want sea salt rot setting in! Enjoy!

Any sturdy clothes - jeans or shorts if preferred and short sleeved shirts. You're not going to be tracking game! Whatever you do, don't wear the khaki shirt & pants with the zebra-banded hat - A) you'll never wear them again & B) you'll look like a tourist bigtime.

shorts or jeans, cotton shirt or top, trainers or light boots. If you are going on trips very early in the morning and it is in the Mara Game reserve you may find that a light jersey might be needed as it can get cold. Hope you enjoy the experience.
