Picture the scene. It's a hot summer's day. You're at work, You have an Orange, Mango and Apricot smoothie in your desk which is probably warmer than it should be. When you open it BOOM smoothie shoots up, even hits the ceiling (and specks are still visible). How can this happen?

Bacteria multiply much faster in warm temperatures. They grow rapidly in the smoothie, digesting nutrients and producing gas. The gas builds up the pressure in the container, so when you open it, boom, it explodes.

Your smoothie was apparently in an airtight container. When it was first made and put into the container, it was very cold, eventually, the warmth increased the pressure inside the container and when you opened it, that pressure was released causing this explosion. Either that or Orange, Mango and Apricot should never be mixed together. It may be the new formula for our new generation rocket fuel.

the only way to answer this is with a couple of assumtions...

I assume there was an airtight lid on the container and I also assume it had been sitting on your desk for a while in the heat. With the smoothie initially being cold, as it's warmed up, the air in the container has expanded so when you took the lid off it was like popping a baloon!

Did you know that there is a 1 in 65million chance that your cell phone will disappear and reappear in your stomach? Its true. Quantum Physics. Look it up in Mental Floss, at any bookstore. Wonder if any of that has something to do with your smoothie?? Ok, seriously, I have no idea what happened except that a perfectly good smoothie decided it was exiting. Its weird though. Hopefully won't happen to you again.
