My sister has terrible period pains. She's tried all those medicines sold at the pharmacy but she says they don't help her at all. It gets so bad that she doesn't even go to school for 2 to 3 days. She's always talking about going to the gyno and having her periods stopped. Is that possible? And if so, is it safe. I mean...ahe's only 11.
It's really painful to see her suffer so much cuz she's just a child. What can I do?

I'm her legal guardian, and our parents aren't around often enough to notice anything wrong.

That's called dysmenorrhea.
She is right about going to the dr, but she needs to stop talking about it and actually do it.
I don't think a doctor can stop a girls periods, but she needs to go to the gyno and ask him/her. There are lots of treatments for that pain. She doesn't need to suffer.
I do take you seriously, but, is there a possibility that she just doesn't want to go to school when she has her time of the month? Lots of girls use that as a reason to not go to school.
Obviously you have seen her in pain....Get her to the doc.

strong period pains can be related to something called endometriosis. it's an inflamation of the uterus' wall, i think. i can't say this is the problem, but surely if she has such strong pain, something is not right, and going to the gyno is the best thing to do. it is possible to stop periods, with the use of hormones (pills, injection, or implants). i don't know if it's ok to do that being so young, because maybe the hormones can interfere with her development, but i've also read about young girls retarding the period for this reason. either way, the gyno will know what to do. be sure it's a good one, nice and gentle, not everybody is comfortable with going to the gyno (i know a girl who went there only when she was 30, because she was ashamed of undressing, and she had endometriosis all this time)

She needs to see the gyno because she could have some issue that medications could help with....She could have fibroids making her periods much more painful or she could have endometriosis as well....that is when tissue normally found in the female organs will travel to other areas and wherever it goes the patient will feel pain..it's terribly painful. I would definitely see that she gets to the doctor to rule out anything serious, especially at her age. Has she tried applying heat to her belly area or back, whichever is bothering her? A good heating pad will really help to ease the pain away...By the way....where are her parents? Do they know all of this? Well, kudos to you for being concerned about your little sister, now just try and see that she gets some help. Good luck!!

She needs to go to a OBGYN soon, her painful periods could be endometriosis, it is something that would need to get taken care of soon, when I was her age I had the same problem, nothing short of putting a heating pad on me helped, or being so drugged up that I fell asleep so I didn't feel it, and I too also missed alot of school for this reason. I went to my doctor and he told me what the problem is, and put me on constant birth control, meaning I only have a period twice a year, and it is completely safe. the two periods I have do not hurt as bad either, because of the hormones in the B.C. and my doctor took care of my endometriosis. Either way, weither your sister has this or not, she needs to go to the OBGYN so the doctor can tell her what is wrong.

She really needs to get to an OBGYN. She's a bit young to get her period and pains are common. Maybe she doesn't want to go to school because she's embarressed. Periods can be stopped through hormone therapy, but the doctor really needs to see her. She could have other health problems to such as cystic ovaries, if so, she needs help quick!

If she is in SERIOUS pain, something is WRONG! She will need to see a doc./gyno. right away! Yes, it is possbile to have her periods stopped. But the only way to do that is to have her uterous removed. If nothing will help her cramps, etc. she needs to see a doc. he/she can give her a med.
Hope tthis helps!

being there for her is pretty much the best thing you can do for her. i dont think it is safe to have her period stoped all together because the blood has to go somewhere.
sounds like you are a great big brother who cares a great deal for your sister so talk to her about going to the doctor and go with her for moral support.
there should be more family oriented people like you
