Go to http://messenger.yahoo.com
At the bottom of the page there is a link in small letters that says launch web messenger. Click it and you can use yahoo messenger via the web. You need to have java enabled for this to work. 2 flash based IM's work great too. These don't require downloads either.

use www.ebuddy.com, they have yahoo messenger, msn messenger and aim without requiring u to download anything
