There are few films that exploit male sexuality like this film and are quite so voyeuristic to the male form...and yes there are "undertones." I will point you in the direction of 3 scenes...
1) the butt slapping shower scene
2) the volley ball scene
3) during a briefing a guy at the back turns to his neighbour and comments that talking about fighting turns him on. The guy next to him replies "stop you're making me hard"
There are more, but I haven't seen the film in a while. Think I might though, cool movie!

The movie is "gay cult" only in that many gay men may list it as a "cult classic" favorite because of the gay undertones (intentional or not).
No the movie was not meant to be "gay" or to appeal to gay men in this way; gay men just happened to pick up on some things that were..."interesting" about it. Also, the closeness of the male characters (who were all young and good-looking) is something they, obviously, enjoy watching.
I know my best friend has loved it and owned it since we were in school (yes, he's gay). :)

I'd say it had definite overtones of homoerotism - Tom Cruise's relationship with Goose is central - far more important than their respective girlfriends, and c'mon, what about that volleyball scene and the Kenny Loggins song "playing with the boys". I rest my case!

Hi. Yes, it is popular with gay men. I'm lesbian and a lot of my guy friends like it because Tom Cruise looks so feminine and yet studly at the same time.

The movie itself was just bullshit of how the USA, can go around shooting down russian jets, and at the same time advertising their own aircraft. It was not a gay movie, just the comararderee you get in all the military force, s in the world.

lets see, perhaps it's the completely unnecessary in the plot, half dressed beach volleyball scene with the song "playin with the boys" on the soundtrack over it. this may have been a hint.
