that plays all media formats (mp3, mp4, asf, wma, wmv, avi, wav, mpeg, etc.). I know if you want to play any of these on iPod, they have to be converted to an iTunes/iPod format. Are there any portable devices similar to iPod that let you play these formats without having to convert the files? Does the MS Zune offer this capability? I've been to a few different sites, but haven't been able to find this info. Any info would be appreciated.

Firstly the ipod supports quite a few audio formats:
AAC (16 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3 and 4), Apple Lossless, AIFF and WAV. On Video, things are very retricted - MPEG-4 conversion is a pain.
Most players dont support some format or the other. So I will answer your question by indicating which formats some popular ipod alternatives support:
Zune:
Audio - WMA, MP3, AAC
Video - WMV, MPEG-4, H.264
Sandisk Sansa e200 series:
Audio - WMA, Protected WMA, MP3, Audible files (but not Audible's .aa format)
Video- AVI, MPEG-1 & MPEG-2 in MPEG, MPG, MPE or VOB(unprotected) formats. MPEG-4 in AVI format, DAT, ASF,QuickTime MOV, and WMV. (QuickTime 6.5 or higher
and Windows Media Player 9 or 10.0 are required for QuickTime MOV file)
Creative Zen Vision M:
Audio - MP3, WMA (inc MS PD DRM), WAV
Video - AVI, DivX⢠4 & 53, XviD4, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG4-SP, WMV9 and Motion-JPEG (DivX and XviD encoded files are playable if they are encoded as standard MPEG-4 Simple (SP) or Advanced Simple Profile (ASP) without GMC support. This product is not certified by DivX Inc. May not play all DivX 4 and 5 files)

The best device now available that will fit your needs is the Cowon A2.It is larger than the ipod ,thats becuase it has a big 4 inch widescreen lcd.The battery is rated at 10 hours video and 20 hours audio.the only draw back to this unit is that it does not support music subscription services. But if you are a person who prefers to convert your cd's to mp3's and you have allot of video divx files then this is the unit for you.to my knowledge the zune will only support windows video files since it is a microsoft product.if you want a full review of the A2 check out iaudiophile.net.i hope this helps

Creative products support more type of media formats, but not all. U still have to convert unpopular fomats, anyway. Y should you worry, converting wouldn't take long.
