For instance, when you see a crusty punk rocker, do you think less of that person? Or some dude that's totally thugged out, would you think him a criminal? Why or why not? Just curious...

I absolutely DO NOT judge a person by their appearance and it drives me crazy when others do this. Maybe because I've been a blue collar worker most of my life and have been exposed to all kinds of different types of people is why I don't do it. I've worked with guys and girls covered in tatts and numerous piercings and they can work circles around some people. And would also give you the shirt off their back. I ALWAYS try to get to know someone before I make an assumption about a person's character.

On one hand, a person's appearance is an outlet for them to express themselves. The clothes I wear, the color of my hair (dyed bright red, if you were wondering)- those are parts of who I am. So in that way, yeah. But I don't assume things like "Oh, you've got a tattoo, you must be a no-good thug." Tattoos can be very meaningful, and I realize that. The problem is not that people judge others by their appearance, as the appearance is an expression of the self, the problem is that people MISjudge others by their appearance. That, I try not to do (The examples you used fall under that category- a crusty punk rocker I would probably think MORE of because of their ability to express themselves, and a "dude that's totally thugged out"- well, I'm not really sure what thugged out means, but I doubt I'd think of them as a criminal, because I avoid thinking of anyone right off in that light).

No I do not judge ppl. I cant stand it when ppl say that"everyone does it." I do not. When I see a punk rocker or a thugged out person I do not think one way or the other. It their actions that I judge. I guess being a black female has instilled in me that ability to accept people based on their character, not their clothes. Also, I think being judgemental is something that is taught. My mom didnt make comments about the way people looked when I was being raised.

But at the same time, people more often then not, do fit the stereotype that their clothes portray. So perhaps this is why people judge. If more people didnt fit the personality their clothes portrayed, then people wouldnt judge because they know that they would be wrong.

For example, when I see a black girl with a million colors of weave in her hair, i dont asssume shes ghetto. But as soon as she opens her mouth, and speaks incorrect grammer with a lot of profanity, I think, she fits the stereo type that some people have about black women.

I try not to, but human nature being what it is, it happens. That first initial look and then I try and squash that until I get to know the person. And I do give the benefit of the doubt. Some people dress like they do for shock value or to get a rise out of people. Others are just who they appear to be. You have to be careful judging people based on their appearance, it could be anybody, nobody or the most wonderful person. We cheat ourselves when we do this, sometimes. If your gut instinct is on high alert, though, you might want to proceed with caution. It is ok to utilize common sense in certain situations.

As a rule whats on the outside comes from within. But every rule has an exception. If you was in the hospital and a "crusty punk rocker" came in and said he was your surgeon what would you think?Be honest now.

Honestly, yes I do judge people on their appearence. I can tell who is a gangsta, or an ex-con, who might be poor, man, the list goes on. I think everybody judges about appearence. What if I were to walk up to a woman, unshaven, dressed in torn sweats, and my teeth are yellow. Would she go out with me? Of course not.

Yes Carol i do.

i never used to but i was niave. ive been backstabbed many times, beaten up a couple of times.

i have no choice but to judge people on the way they behave and look. some people look very nice and are very nice people but u cant trust them immediately.

if i see a punk rocker i feel fine because they have never bothered me in the past. i respect him. he is a normal person, i know this cos ive been to schools who had relations who were punks.

I do judge people on their appearance, and I just can't help it. I'm in the catering business and if someone who looks dirty or untidy asks for a job, I say no immediately no matter what they have to say. I think alot of employers would agree with me

Yes, we all do. I have preconceived expectations of people based on there appearance, however I try not to let that interfere with getting to know the person inside. It is the closed minded people that let their ignorance prevent them from getting past the appearance.

But know if you want to be accepted into another circle sometimes you must conform to the circle beliefs. (i.e. professional look)

Regardless of what the person is wearing, I kind of judge by how clean they are, I suppose that's still appearance.
