Why exactly does North Korea want bilateral talks with the US?

I keep hearing that this is what they want, but I never get an explanation why.

Thank you very much.

Right, but if they just want to play with the "big dawgs", then why not choose Russia or China to hold bilateral talks with?

Because the whole point of Kim wanting Nuclear weapons is to be able to bypass all of the U.N Bullsh** and to talk directly to the big-boys.

As Kim jong il sees it, he has some leverage now to get what he wants. He has something over the head of the west and he wants to see a profit from it.

North Korea has spent roughly 35% of their GDP the last decade on defence spending. Now that his army is Nuclear, he wants to pull his country up-out-of poverty and get rid of the sanctions using threat of Nuclear force.
