The Romans were a decadent society who depended on slavery to do the work of keeping the society going. This was bound to fail when Roman citizens shunned work in favour of the pursuit of leisure.

Nothing could have saved them. In fact Romans survived that long because tehy established a system of rule of law, rather than rule by individual whims. But the empire was too unwieldy, and heterogeneous. A society to survive has to qualify itself to be a nation. But Roman contribution was such that it left many states/nations - in Europe - who subscribe to their way of thinking.
