best example of social advertising is the

now nearly defunct organisation Lok Seva Sanchar Parishad, which was promoted by Doordarshan and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting about 10 years ago. This organisation was to act as a catalyst in developing social advertising which could be supported by both Government and private organisations.

The first assignment which was (with some difficulty) financed by the Government to the tune of Rs 4 lakhs was the film Torch of Freedom created by Suresh Malik, who was then the Creative Head of O&M Advertising. I am sure many of the readers remember this film which was on the subject of national integration in which well-known sports persons representing different parts of the country ran with a blazing torch through the length and breadth of India. The film really made one feel proud of the country and of the young people who had brought such glory and kudos to our country.

This film was followed by another on the same theme of national integration. This film was called Ek Sur in which the tune Mile sur mera tumhara to bane ek sur hamara was sung by a galaxy of well-known musicians, singers and film personalities such as Bhimsen Joshi, Lata Mangeshkar and Sharmila Tagore.

Unfortunately, this organisation which subsequently received funding from the Ford Foundation, did little of note and the Government wasted a wonderful opportunity of bringing together public and private funds with the best communication talent within the country to convey to the citizens of this country areas of social importance.

There have been individual institutions who gave done good work. The example which springs to my mind is the campaign by the National Literacy Mission for encouraging adult education. This campaign, also done by O&M Advertising, was excellent and I am told resulted in some positive changes in this area. Other advertising campaigns have been on areas such as joining the Army, declaring illegal or black money assets and even a campaign by MTV asking the youth of India who are above 18 years of age to cast their votes in the last election.

As can be seen from some of the examples I have given you, there is a lot of work that has been done in India on social advertising. I know at least these three advertising agencies, particularly Lintas while under Alyque Padamsee, which have special units with the mandate to create social communication messages which can be sponsored by interested parties. No charges are made for the creative work done, which is the contribution of the agency to society
