When a husband takes two wives he has to treat them both EXACTLY the same, they should both have a house each, income, food etc from the husband, what he gives to one he MUST give to the other, the amount of time spent with one should also be spent with the other both are equal.
A second wife could be a widow, or been divorced they find it hard to re marry some men don't want them, and men who want a second wife take them to give them security (believe it or not its true) this way the woman keeps her dignity in tact.
There are a lot of positive things in a relationship like this its the way they have educated, we Westerners would never accept this its not in our ways.

Hmm...I think you are referring to Muslim men who are allowed to marry more than one wife...
I think this whole concept has been misunderstood for years, this rule was created to sperad the word of Islam, not to be disrespectful or degrading to women. If a man was Muslim and he was already married by saw a women in dire need of a husband ie widowed with children, or some form of abuse etc then he would marry her...
There are strict rules about acquiring another wife...which makes it near impossible to do so...First off you have to get your permission from your first wife that she would be ok with that...(thats not gonna happen it most cases).
Secondly, you must have a valid reason for marrying again, like you want a child and your first wife cannot have any...
Thirdly, you are required by Islamic law that you must treat your women EQUALLY...thats whats tricky...that never happens...its near impossible to do so...so there you go...if you really follow the rules, it's pretty much not allowed.

Islam is one religion which permits 2 / 3 and upto 4 wifes but there are some very strict rules for that....
