Our garage walls are ready to be finished with either paneling or drywall. Several questions - which is cheaper to do? Which is easier? Which is quickest? I have some experience with paneling and it is fairly easy to work with - around light switches and things and I know I can get some decent looking paneling for around $10 to $12 a sheet. I know very little about drywall. After this is done we will drywall the ceiling - if that factors into your answers. Other considerations I am missing? Thanks!

Insulation is alread done. We finished that first. I have no issues wilt doing the ceiling first but also the walls are about 9 feet high so I was thinking about doing 8' of the walls and finishing the last foot after the ceiling is done. Grage will only be used as a work place at most. I will not be doing paneling and drywall both - too $$$. Covering the drywall with something cheap likewall paper might be possible but then again might just leave the dry wall finishing for the next owner or my retirement project. All I want is the insulation covered.

First of all install a ceiling FIRST,,always.
Do you intend to use the room for more than a garage? Do you intend to insulate?
Drywall first, then paneling if you wish. If it's only meant to be a garage I can't imagine spending money on more than drywall, and if you shop you might find drywall for less than paneling in a 4 x 8 sheet.
Drywall can be cut with a razor knife or saw if you prefer, is easily installed, and can be painted over, wall papered, or completely covered by paneling.
Your being unfamiliar may be an issue in finishing raw drywall.

OK first ceilings are installed before the walls no matter what material you use.
Paneling is installed correctly OVER drywall so if you are going to use paneling you will have to drywall first. If you panel over drywall it is not necessary to tape the joints, saving alot of time.
Paneling is not fire resistant and in a garage where there is the chance of fire it is advisable to have a fire resistant surface.

drywall takes alot of time to finish. you have to have a 2x4 or 2x2 to nail to every 16 inches and then drywall compound to fill the nail holes and seams.then sand then apply the joint compound again and sand.you also have to apply drywall tape to seams and its a messy job.now with paneling you have to have 2x4s or 2x2s to nail to and thats every 16 inches as well.if you can do paneling you can do drywall will some help.either way you will need a few extra hands.i would put in insulation on the outside walls to keep moisture down and the garage temp stable

Definitely drywall from a safety perspective. It's not hard to install. However you will need to create a jig, get some friends together, or rent a drywall lift to help you drywall the ceiling.

Drywall, if you put a hole in it, it is easier to repair and the fire rating is better.

Why not panel it with pegboard? You can even paint it but you will be able to hang all kinds of things on the wall.
