We are going to replace our current old wood floor boards and we like stained oak planks. Does anyone have this type of solid wood oak flooring - I want to know just how well it wears - will it mark easily (stilettos etc;) it will be laid in our lounge and dining room and a small hallway so fairly heavy traffic areas.

A perfect choice. Oak is a very strong wood. Just make sure your contractor will supply you with the best, with a fairly uniform grain pattern. Ask for a moisture test on the wood. As for a installation warranty as well.

Maintenance is low even on high traffic areas. Used 4 inches x 8 feet x 1 inch thick (finished) planks on my floor 12 years ago. No polyU coating. No stain applied but asked the contractor to apply sanding sealer and had two coats of bees wax rubbed, the second coat done after 6 months. The wax seals the wood grain for good and has kept the floor glossy but not slippery.

tongue and grooved flooring in pine is cheaper but doesnt hold up to traffic as well as oak.if you install oak t and g apply an extra coat or 2 of lacquer to help the wood resists traffic makes.the already stained flooring would need one coat of sealant.you could use pergo flooring which is alread stained and sealed plus its cheaper and doesnt require your door casings to be cut for installation unless you have the 3/4 inch flooring already

I have oak floors in my kitchen , hallway and conservatory , its the kitchen that gets the most damage as if you drop a knife or most heavy items they will dent it , but as your not putting it in the kitchen that does not matter.!
The hallway one is fine no problems at all , the conservatory is still beautiful too, we have stained ours and put one coat of varnish on as when it is cleaned it drys fast, we have had the floors down for over 5 yrs now

I always say to people about to lay new flooring.
Get everything under the floor checked out, its amazing the number of people who get new flooring installed, only to discover that they require an electrical socket in a new position, central heating pipes moved, etc
Oak boards are terrific if laid and treated well. will last for years.

any wood flooring will mark .although not easily but those little nicks and dings are what make real wood so attractive .. just give your flooring aquality seal once laid.

i had solid oak flooring fitted this year, it does,nt mark, but you need to take care with scuff marks from trainers, its very hard wearing, expensive but worth it as it will last for years and is resandable.
