I would not rely on just one. There is no PAID FOR or FREE solution that is perfect.
AVG Anti-virus
great anti-virus program

Ad-aware
I can't say enough about using Ad-aware to help keep your computer clean from adware and SpyWare. When used in conjunction with SpyBot, you have a fairly clean machine.

SpyBot Search & Destroy
SpyBot is really good at hunting down and removing SpyWare and Adware from your computer.

Download and run AVG virus scanner from http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup/avg71free_405a782.exe for free. This will handle the viruses.
For spyware, run both Ad-aware Peronal Edition ( http://www.lavasoftusa.com ) and Skybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/) to remove any spyware. Run both as one may caught something the other missing. Then go to microsoft.com and download Defender to protect against future infections.
Because viruses and adware and two different issues, you need a program for each. The virus scanner runs all the time in the background, checking every file you open. The adware programs have to be manually run (I do once a week) to check for adware and spyware.

There is a program call SuperAntiSpyware. It scans for spyware and viruses. It is best program I have come across so far. It is better than Spy-Bot and Ad-ad ware and can pick up virus' better than Norton. Search google for the right link and yes the free version is excellent!!

One program that I use is called Eset Nod32. You can get a free 30-day trial at http://eset.com. Their program can detect viruses, trojans, spyware, adware, and other type of malware. It even features an internet scanning feature to prevent web pages from even displaying malicious content (you can choose to disable this feature manually if you don't want it) Another great program I've used is Avast. Avast does background scanning of your computer and can check internet and network files prior to their being downloaded to your pc. If the files infected you are denied the download and giving a message of whether to continue anyways or block it. Both programs can also check email attachments when you use an email program (e.g: outlook, outlook express, mozilla mail, opera mail, eudora, thunderbird) Avast can also scan web-based email. (like google mail, yahoo mail, hotmail, etc.) Avast is free and can be downloaded at http://avast.com. One program I came across (not free after 30 days) is called Previx1 (http://previx.com) It's purpose is to remove infected files after you get the infection and to keep your computer from being infected again. It uses special quarantining to completely block and allow you to remove the files after the quarentine. It is a community based antivirus/antispyware program meaning users can submit files as being malicious and previx adds them to their database to protect all users.
I hope this helps; stay healty. good luck...

I agree that AVG is the best, if you are having a tuff time getting rid of malicious software virus that the free Microsoft malicious spy-ware remover can't get. go to MERIJN.com and the free applications can get rid of anything including cool-search viruses and ETC. it also has several things to inoculate your system as well.

ANTIVIRUS:
Best is norton anti virus 2005. For those who choose others, i am glad to tell all of you that norton antivirus has script blocking and internet worm protection, which makes your system security so tight.
VERY VERY LITTLE TECH DETAILS:
It helps in preventing Buffer-Overflow attacks via network and script blocking helps stopping javascripts from executing malicious scripts like handling with registry/files. Yes, javascript CAN handle with files. The following code will try to crash your system, So dont even do it, and if you do I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE:
var fso = new ActiveXObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject");
a=fso.OpentTextFile("C:\\BOOT.INI");
a.Write("I crashed your system");
a.Close();
More info about file handling using js is available in MSDN Library. Search in http://msdn.microsoft.com/library
I do not wish to give you more technical details, if i do so almost all of you will get bored in reading this. So, believe me, norton is the best .

ADWARE REMOVAL:
Coming to adware, as many said, you can trust lavasoft ad-aware.

I heard of something called Disk Doctor, But it might not exsist anymore. Also, Macintosh has a built in virus-blocker that is excellent.
In the meantime, don't e-mail me!
I don't need any viruses, my parents would kill me lol
