When you pull up for a shot and mean to go glass, you have to call it. I mean, it's unusual for someone to not give you credit for it even if it was a lucky shot. But yea, that's what it is - they don't want any lucky shots going in off the backboard so when you're shooting off the backboard, before the ball hits the backboard, say "GLASS" or "BACKBOARD!"

Playing with youngsters. Rucker's park and other throw down baller spots don't ask for calling shots off the backboard.

You'd have to ask them what newbie rule they made up. They probably call foul when you knock them over too.

I'm in PA now, but I'm from NYC.

Good LUCK!

Depending on who you play and what there rules are, some require that any shot that doesnt go directly in, and you use the backboard you have to call it in order to get credit for it going in. Ive only seen it , when playing for money, but mostly its just trashtalk nowadays to say that your shot was lucky.

If you're going to the "bank," you have to say you're going to the "bank." No lucky shots.
