Files are stored on your hard drive in bits and pieces scattered all over the place.
Defragmenting helps reorganize the bits and pieces into whole files on your hard drive so the hard drive works less hard to access files.

Fragmenting reduces performance.
For example, on a disk, the heads must move more frequently to read a file that is scattered all over the disk. Head movement is very slow in computer terms, it might take milliseconds.

Rather simply - Fragmenting spreads the files around the hard drive. While "Defragmenting" puts files together on the hard drive and speeds things up. See here: http://www.cyberwalker.com/faqs/how-tos/defrag-faq.html

Slows it down. Files end up being stored in pieces all over your hard drive in a random manner. Defragging puts them in order so that they can be read quickly.
