Ask the rental agency. Most rental cars are not allowed on certain roads in Maui, particularly the back way coming back down from Hana. You probably need a 4x4 if you want to take the back road. If you are only doing the front road, not such an issue. But you should ask the rental agency to make sure you don't end up with any surprise charges.

We almost got a convertible when we were in HI and after being there for a while we were glad we didn't for two reasons 1) being a news program that talked about how thieves target convertible rental cars cause they are easy to get into (cut open the top) and tourists generally take a lot of stuff with them in the car 2) every time it rained unexpectedly people were frantically pulling over to put the tops up.
