Dude, you are SERIOUSLY a slave to fashion if you ask this sort of question. Actually, I think the "lower than ankle" socks I see guys wearing today look gay. They remind me of the "peds" teenage girls wore on the tennis court with their Tretorns!
Get a life and think about more important stuff than SOCKS, okay?

There is a time and a place for most fashion. If you're playing soccer or baseball or similar sports you do wear "high" socks more for protection than anything else.
Guys who wear "high" socks in a casual setting - with shorts - are not necessarily gay but they are definitely making a poor fashion choice. It looks stupid.
If a guy is going to wear tennis shoes with shorts then he needs anklet socks - the ones that do not appear over the shoe. Wearing high socks with work boots and shorts looks okay and is again worn more for protection than fashion.
A growing number of guys have no fashion sense at all and they'll wear just about anything with anything. Wearing white calf high socks with shorts is a stupid look for sure but wearing white socks with colored bands around the top is ultmiate stupidity. STOP IT!
Another fact for you fashion unconscience souls. Sweat doesn't stink. At least, it shouldn't. Human Sweat has no natural odor. So, if you're wearing socks so your shoes won't stink from your bare feet then you have a diet problem. You need to get your sytem cleaned out, drink more water and clear fluids and introduce a routine into your workout that will cause you to sweat a lot until you get yourself purged of whatever it is that causes your sweat to stink.
Wearing shoes without socks has its place in all fashion circles - women do it all the time. Gold Toe Socks are some of the best men's socks on the market today and they offer the perfect cut anklet sock to wear with all low rise shoes - like tennis shoes and deck shoes. Otherwise, forget the socks.

Hmm, I guess you'd have to ask the thousands of soccer players around the world who wear high socks. Plus add in the basketball and baseball players.
Doesn't seem likely, does it? I think this is either a myth or an ignorant question.

I don't know about other people, but I really don't like the high socks trend. I think it makes boys look stupid and foolish. If I were a guy, I'd only wear ankle socks. Just my opinion though.
