If by average you mean the taking those people I know and averaging, intelligence or whatever else you want to measure, yes, as a group half of them would be below the average of the group. However, if you were to compare them to the general populace, no, they would not be below average.

Of course. But it is not actually statistically true.
Because we immerse ourselves in different environments.
For example I go to the unitarian church.
If you work at mcdonald's you may run into a different group (with a different average) depending on whether the mcdonald's is in the middle of a research building at stanford or someplace else.
The differences are small, but could be there.
Some professions naturally attract the gifted?
Some professions naturally attract the un-gifted?
So depending on your profession you may be existing in an environment where more are above or below average?
