You hate the word soccer because the proper name for the game is football. It is called football because the word comprises the two key facets of the game, namely that it is a ball game where you use your feet.
Sadly, Americans get confused by the term football as they think that it refers to a game where you primarily use your hands while running around in protective clothing. I am even informed by a friend that lives in Australia that even over there they have a popular T Shirt that says "It's football mate not soccer"

Soccer is an 100% English word, it doesn't come from America.
Its simply an abbreviation of Association Football (the sports "correct" name and a phrase that was very normal in England at least up to the 1960s)
Its been in use in England for at least 100 years and was used long, long before Americans had even seen the game. So whats the problem?
Americans have to call it soccer simply because they have a long established version of football of their own, and need to differentiate. Exactly in the same way as the English once had to differentiate between Association Football and Rugby Football..and gave birth to the words "soccer" and "rugger".

Hmmm probably because we're forced to use the 's' word when explaining the game to yanks who use the word Football to describe a sport onvolving an egg shaped thing (ball?) and wearing some armour. Our (proper) football uses the feet contantly and we kick a ball. We should use football not Soccer 100% of the time we are not talking someone American.

Soccer is an awful word, other sports are called football i.e Gaelic and American, they've got the ball in their hands half the time. FOOTBALL is the game I play not soccer

It's an American word. These idiots have destroyed our language.
Other stupid idiots who speak our language have adopted the stupid words they use and I suppose, made more common than proper English. We call it football and to be honest with you, it's more football than what these arsehole Americans, Australians, New Zealanders and Canadians call football. Some sport that resembles rugby is these idiots call football.
