Well thanks for the Microsoft rant, anyway if by best you mean fastest then it is the Core 2 Extreme.

I enjoy the technology of multi-processors.
But, nothing Microsoft makes will properly run them... If you want to do high speed, or multi processing, you need to follow the lead of Microsoft, by NOT using Microsoft products on them! 45,000 computers at Redmond, Hotmail.com, MSN.com, Microsoft.com all run on Linux!!! One Linux system replaced up to 12 Microsoft systems!!!
Microsoft accountants understand it when 80% of the labor force of technicians can be REDUCED or LAID OFF!!!
The consecutive processing modus of MS does not take advantage of any multi-core or multi-processor, or, multi-processing technology that exists in Open Source Software.
So, all multi-tasking, multi-user, multi-processor (multi-core) tasks run 50X faster in FOSS than in MS. My dual processor PII-350 ASUS P2B boards running Linux, all benchmark about equal in total throughput, to those multi core Intels, running the Microsoft Virus Magnet.
Now, with 64bit processsors out, that are multi-core, we should look to running true 64 bit Operating Systems, which have been extant since 1993 in Government, Business, and Development and now have hundreds (if not thousands) of competent, well tested, and proven 64-bit applications, programs, suites!
You heard about Microsoft trying to issue a 64bit OS, that has no 64 bit applications, only 32 bit ones, and is STILL vulnerable to all the definitions!? Why go through the growing pains, and the expense?
FOSS are all immune to the 150,000 Microsoft Virus Definitions, so no extra programs need run and take up overhead... Yes, we all, even Microsoft, (with the Aruba Routers!) run Linux based firewalls for Internet use. create your own! http://ipcop.org

I don't think there really is a 'best' processor. It really depends on what you need and what you want to use it for.
