Some of my favorites and why:
* The Back to the Future Trilogy - great set of comedies, great lines, and classic performances from Lea Thompson, Christopher Lloyd, and Michael J. Fox
* Pretty in Pink - absolutely no competing with Jon Cryer's enthusiastic dance to Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness" - what an AWESOME scene! Duckie just makes the whole movie for me! And it doesn't hurt that Andrew McCarthy is SUCH a cutie!
* Sliding Doors - Gwenyth Paltrow is pretty good in this movie, but ultimately it all boils down to John Hannah at his best, and in my opinion, this is one of the most underappreciated movies of its time. GREAT flick.
* 10 Things I Hate About You - even though I'm no longer a teenager (it's been nearly a decade :-)), this is still one of my favorite High School movies. It typifies all the "cliques", sometimes to the extreme (the "white rastas"?! Priceless!). Great performances from Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger as well.
* That Thing You Do - this movie made me believe that the Wonders were a real band, just like the Beatles. I actually believe that they actually rose to fame and had a sudden fall, just as depicted in the movie. Everything just seemed so "real". That, to me, is the mark of a good movie. (Either that or I'm pretty gullible.) Tom Hanks was good, but I really loved Liv Tyler, Steve Zahn, Jonathan Schaech, and Tom Everett Scott.
There are tons more, but these are ones that I don't think have been mentioned yet, and they're the ones that came to mind right away....

Feelgood film has to be Bridget Jones, both of them, they are funny, sad and make you feel all gooeey!!!! Also, Pretty Woman and Sleepless in Seattle (proper girly films)
Horror/Slasher Film at the moment has to be the SAW films and the Final Destination films they are so original. Can't wait for SAW3 coming out soon.
Sad films have to be Schindler's List (obvious reasons) and I just recently watched the 911 film Flight 93 I think it's called, I am sure World Trade Centre will be the same.
I know that is more than one, but how can you just have one there are so many good ones.

Silent Hill is my favorite movie because it was made out of my fav. videogame. At first I thought they were gonna screw it up like they did with Resident Evil, Doom and so many others, but this one stuck to the videogame like glue. Now that I own the movie on DVD I saw the documentaries and found out that the Director made it a requisit that every actor, painter, costume designer, set builder and so on (EVERYONE WORKING ON THE FILM) played the game before they even started reading the scrips making them put thamselves in the position on the gamer to know what we'd like in the film. Overall I think it's a really good film and the best part is yet to come, because they left a gap open to make a sequel...by all means it looks like Silent Hill's sequel will be about Silent Hill 3 the videogame.

My favourite film is "Hello Dolly" with Barbra Streisand... I think the reason I love it so much is because when I was six a loving family adopted me and took me out of a very abusive environment. My new mother took me to see loads of plays, ballets, and operas... the very first one was "Hello Dolly" with Yvonne De Carlo as Dolly. One of the dancers winked at me (I was on the front row!) Shortly thereafter, she bought me the soundtrack and I spent many afternoons dressing up and being "Dolly Levi". It was so wonderful to just be a little girl instead of a nursemaid to a druggie and rag doll and punching bag to the **** she was with. So, I think somehow the movie still represents an ascent from hell to heaven for my little girl self.

Dirty Dancing! It reminds me of countless childhood arguments of who was "Baby". Everybody tried to do that dance she does on the bridge and failed miserably. I watched it on Sunday for the first time in years and had another go at the dance, still looked like two boys having a fight. Still a great film though!

Notting Hill. Good story, humorous, great cast, well acted, no swearing, and very satisfying. Saw it for the first time when I was living in America; the dumb Yanks didn't understand the humour and walked out in droves. My wife and I were the only ones laughing at the subtleties.
