Saving the docs as web pages, maybe? But then wouldn’t the text be untidy when they appear on the web?

If you want to preserve the fonts too, then you have to depend only on PDF else a html page with eot support. Word document is not a perfect tool to post a document with specail charectors or fonts or formats

I think the best bet is to either have it as a zip file or use a pdf as this keeps all formatting. the problem is not everyone will have all the fonts that you and so may not be able to view your file correctly.

RTF is a good standard. Openable in almost any text editor and preserves your formatting.
