I have Microsoft SQL server installed - I downoaded it free from Microsoft! no idea how it works though. I may try to figure that out one of the days. Your main problem will be bandwidth.

Well that depends on what type of server you want to use.

If you want to use a windows server (EG, 2003, NT or XP Pro/Ent) then you would need to format your hard drive and install that operating system. Of course you could setup multiple partitions and keep your current operating system but that is really beyond the scope of this anwser.

If you want a http server, then you can download apache. Don't bother using it on Win95, 98, 98SE or WinME because they are not stable. However you can use it on Win NT, 2003, or XP because they are far more secure (still insecure but better than the 9x series). System stability is also better.

If you want to run a FTP server thats also fairly easy. There are several free ftp servers available. Again don't use them on Win9x though.

The same can be said about VNC, Terminal server etc etc etc.

You need to tell us exactly what you want to use. IT sounds to me though that it's just a thing you've heard on the internet and you think you need one in order for your computer to be 'good'.

Don't install a server unless you actually need it for a purpose because it opens your computer up for possible attacks. Always be careful.

Tell us exactly what you want to do and we will help.

Every PC has a service called .......... The server service, this means it can share files and printers and if it is attached to a ADSL modem you can even share this. No need to buy anything else.
Buying Server 2003 is about £486. Using LINUX requires training. Good old Windows can meet your needs.

Well first, check to see if there is about 4g of memory on your computer. If running a network, you will need at lease 10g of memory. Second you will need to buy windows 2003 family server . TO run a application server, you will need to buy an additional software to run that program, but the family server will let you make users and add computers to your network and monitor there activity.

This is a very generic question, What kind of server do you want to install?

If it is a webserver, I recommend that you use Linux, forget about Windows. Linux is free and it is way more stable and secure.

you will need some software like win 2003 first then just insert the disk and follow the instructions on the screen. but make sure you have plenty of memory first.
