The angle of the 'scratches' from honing should be around 45degrees to 60degree max. You have to experiment with stroke speed and match it to rpm of drill. Problem is, you do remove a small amount of material if you ball hone for long enough (usually takes less than 30seconds so isnt an issue) Get any old cylinders to practice on. Use around 250~300 rpm as a starting point.
If you cant get honing oil, brake fluid works but will damage any painted surface it gets on. I usually clamp cylinders into bench vice and work horizontal, easier than vertical. Make a shield to stop oil flying everywhere (old cardboard box

With a ball hone, use a slow drill speed (rpms). Just enough so the drill won't stall. You can add a little more rpms. Very fast pumping movement of the drill in an in & out of the cylinder. Honing oil is best. Any type of light oil is adequit. After a few passes, check the angle of the cross hatch lines (the scratches the hone makes). Should be at a 60 degree angle. Adjust the speed of the drill and the in & out movement to get the correct results. The amount of times doesn't really make a difference. Keep checking to make sure the cylinder is completly honed.
