Because they don't have enough strength to lift them up.

Depends I suppose on what you are asking about in specific... i.e., what kind of things are they throwing down.

Otherwise, the most reasonable answer that you're probably going to get is because in the beginning babies have to learn to develop all of their fine motor skills... They have to learn that their fingers will hold onto things, that they can reach a little further if they extend their arms, that what they see eventually they will be able to reach for. It's all about exploration and fine turning all of the things that they're learning in a day.

Often times babies simply don't understand the 'cause and effect' and that's what they're going to teach themselves. By swinging an item really fast in the air, or having it hit something they learn that they have to hold on tighter or they're going to lose whatever it is they're holding onto -- directly resulting in the sound of the item hitting the floor.

The whole of a baby's life is learning what they can and can't do... and then perfecting it -- developing the muscles to make them stronger, the intelligence to know what's going to happen when they do something and the very idea that they can do more than one thing at a time. It all looks like a game, but in reality... it's them learning to live in our world.

Or of course... the child could just be throwing the item down because they don't want it, or it hurt them... or they're more interested in something else.

Either way... It's all the same.

Firstly, one has to realise that babies are alot more intelligent than we would think. Essentially, when they throw things away, they already know that the action is wrong, however they are testing you as the parent or authority figure,to see if you will react. To asertain how they stand in the relationship. If you allow them to throw e.g a plate and do nothing about it, they actually view you as an equal and therefore not in a position to tell them what to do. This trate remains for life and results in a rebellious attitude in youth and early adulthood. If you however, show them clearly that this action of throwing down is wrong, the child realises your authority. This results in a far more adapted youth and adult

If you mean infants they really can't help it. If you mean the older infants and toddlers. They do it because they can. Some will do it to see how many times you will pick it up befor you just take it away. Others will throw it down to watch it fall, they are learning, others will throw it simply because they don't want it and you keep giving it to them.

Cause and effect...They like to watch things hit the floor and make a noise, also the reaction from mom and dad. If they get a reaction each time they throw things, it becomes a very fun game to them!

It's an experimental thing, just like why they put everything in their mouths. They put everything in their mouths to see the different textures etc. They throw things down to see the different sounds etc. I makes when it hits the floor.

Because they don't have the motor skills to hold them and play with them yet. So eventually they just throw them down while they're shaking them.

They are figuring out how the world works. Sometimes a child will throw a toy down, you give it back, they do it again, over and over. They are figuring out both gravity and cause and effect. "I drop the toy.....it falls to the floor.....mom picks it up."

One of two reasons, First it is a toy they really do not want! Second, they love to here the sound of it hitting the floor. Enjoy your baby & give them all the love you have.
