Hi, I have two goldfish who live quite happily with 5 Zebra Danios and 5 white cloud minnows as well as a clown loach. I bought them all from my local aquatic shop, the Danios and Minows came out of tropical tanks but they can live in cold water tanks, when I got them home I had to leave them in floating in the bags longer than the goldfish to allow the water temperature to come down to the cold water level properly. once this was done they all live happily together. Always make sure with the Daniios that you have more then 3 as otherwise they will get bored easily and pick on the other fish in the tank. Lou

Any other types of goldfish including shubunkins, small varieties of koi etc. You can also put in fantails, orandas, lionheads, blackmoors, bubble eyes etc. These fancy species are prone to white spot disease and swim bladder trouble though, so check quality before purchasing. Coldwater loaches and catfish are a reasonable option as they eat algae, but can grow quite large very quickly and can be sometimes aggressive. One option to consider is white cloud mountain minnows. They are a shoaling variety of fish and are cheap to buy, plus they do equally well in a coldwater tank as in a tropical setup. The goldfish won't harm them despite the size difference as they're peaceful, but it just gives another extra variety on top of what you've already got in the tank. Be careful not to overstock with goldfish however, as they can be very messy and produce a lot of waste, so you have to manage the water properly.
Remember, good fishkeepers look after the water, the fish look after themselves !!!.

First make sure the tank and filter you have are adequate for your goldfish. They need 10 gallons per fancy goldfish and a filter that moves 10 times the gallons in the tank per hour.
Here's a good goldfish caresheet:
http://thegab.org/Articles/GoldfishBasics.html
I keep my goldie tank at around 76 degrees and have kept various tropicals with my goldies off an on and haven't had any problems with it other than some of the tropicals getting eaten. However, you need a backup plan (another tank) if it doesn't work out. You'd also need to quarantine any new fish before adding them to your main tank or you risk making your goldfish sick.
Fish to avoid
-aggressive fish like cichlids, pirhanna, etc
-plecos have a difficult time getting enough to eat when in with goldies and can try to eat the goldie
-ottos tend to get stuck in goldie mouths and the first ray on their dorsal fin gets stuck in the goldie's mouth making it difficult to get the otto out.
-scaleless fish. The drugs used to treat common parasites have to be half-dosed with scaleless fish (e.g. catfish), so that makes treating goldies when they're sick more difficult.

goldfish with goldfish. make sure that they are the same body type (fantails with fantails) or the single tailed ones will eat all of the food. Goldfish are cold water vegetarians that produce a lot of waste and this can cause problems to other cold water fish.

I really wouldn't put any other fish in there except of the goldfish/koi family. Goldfish are very acidic and dirty fish. Nothing else will really live for long with them. Good luck.

i'd stick with the different variants of goldfish they sell in the pet shop in the cold tanks. Have you a big enough tank for more fish to be added?

Fish like fighter, gourami, red swordtail are somtimes known to
indulge in fights.
Goldfish are cool people.they are harmless and don't bother
anyone much;like cows.
just keep extremely small sized(especially newborn) fish
away from them,so that they are'nt swallowed accidently.

These are sometimes available in aquarium shops.
Carp
Tench
Common pond loach (interesting to look at)
Sucking loach (keeps the glass clean)
These you would probably have to catch yourself.

It is also possible to keep coldwater prawns and snails.
