Waterworld was filmed on an artificial (man-made) island off the coast of Kona on the Big Island. The island was right outside Kawaihae Harbor. See the link below for a picture of the filming location.

The island (unnamed) is the tip of Mount Everest. In the movie it is referred to as "dryland".
