If anything, it is likely to put people off buying the product.

Not very shrewd marketing in my opinion

As a smoker myself, i know that the cigarette manufacturers don't actually want to place those warning stickers on the side of their packets. They're required to do so by law to ensure that everyone who buys their product knows the side effects. It's illegal to sell products that have been deemed harmful to the general public knowingly. So the warning stickers are a burden but also a saviour of sorts because it allows them to continue selling the cigarettes. It should be illegal period. But that would eliminate alcohol products as well. So why go through the whole hassle?

To me, i barely notice those warning stickers now. It's horrible. But smoking is one of my only vices. Albeit a horrible vice but... it's my choice. I don't appreciate judgement especially when it's coming from a guy or girl that gets drunk every Friday night.

We all have our own vices... our own little masochistic tendencies.

This is mine.

Also, do they think people don't already KNOW smoking's bad for you? Like, one day they're gonna look at the packet and notice the warning for the first time. "Holy crap! I thought these things had Vitamin C in 'em an sh*t!"

In truth, ASH want the warnings to be bigger. They're lobbying for it right now in fact. They want the whole packet to be a warning.

So that people know the risks they are taking every time they pick up the packet of cigarettes!

If you have ever seen anyone die from Lung Cancer you would put even bigger notices on the sides of the packets!

It is not a pretty sight, I can tell you!!!!!!

So that is why they put the notices on the sides of the packets!

But you do not even need to put a cigarette in your mouth to get Lung Cancer, breathing in someone else's smoke can have just as bad affect on your lungs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's their way of saying "Yes we told you people these things are bad for you so if you smoke them and get cancer and die, it's not our fault. We warned you." So many have tried to sue tobacco companies and failed largely because there is a warning label that tells people the dangers of using the product. It makes them feel like they've done their part by putting that on the labels.

You mean like the ones that say - Smoking is highly addictive, don't start?! I know what you mean, if you're close enough to read that you've obviously bought a pack and if you're in the UK, you're unlikely to want to waste the £5+ that they cost for 20! The companies obviously don't want to put them there, it's just a government thing, like on alcohol adverts where they put the tiny web address saying www.drinkaware.co.uk. If they don't comply, they can't sell their product.

They have a responsibility by law to warn people of the effects of smoking. Like McDonald's have to put a warning on their coffee cup that their coffee is hot, so people cannot claim ignorance and that "Nobody told them"

It is the law here in the USA.. It's a warning so you have a harder time trying to sue the big tobacco companies.. People still get damages sometimes in their suits.

It's called CYA. Smokers started suing cigarette manufacturers, because they got sick from smoking, so instead of taking responsibility for their own actions, they got lawyers, who of course, know everything there is to know about screwing without a screwdriver.

Those are just another way for the man to get us down and remind us that we're horrible, awful people! I say let's get the electrical tape and go on a rampage - we'll cover up all those silly warnings!

"Smoke 'em if ya got 'em!"
