My kids have to be in their rooms and ready for bed by 8.30 on school nights, they don't have to be in bed, they can read or watch TV or a DVD for awhile. Most nights they are out like a light by 9.30.
We have done this with all 4 of our kids, because my husband and I enjoy and need some time together, as we are not just parents, we are husband and wife, we were and are best friends before we had kids and we will be long after our kids have grown up.

Thats up to you as a parent but i use the following 8pm younger than 8, 9pm between 8 and 10, 10pm at 11, 10.30pm at 12 and 11.00 at 13 and this is where it stops on school nights. On other nights 12pm is the limit for 14 up to 16.

The rules that I have for my 2 Children ages 9 and 11 are that they are to be in bed by 8:30. They need their rest. If they stay up later than 9:00 they don't want to get up to get ready for school in mornings.
It depends on you as the parent on your rules. Noone knows your child better than you do. But don't let them make the rules or you will regret it later.

There is no "Required" time, but 9pm is a good time for a 12 year old to go to bed.
