Bearing in mind that anything obnoxious to you is harmful would I be within my rights to ask you to move or have a wash if I found your perfume/aftershave offensive.

Absolutely. If you can smell it with your smoker's nose--it must really be bad.

Perfume won't harm your health, unless your wife decides she doesn't like the smell on your clothes!
So no, you wouldn't be within your rights. However, you could ask politely, explain you are allergic to the smell and hope they listen. I went for a job interview (luckily I wasn't wearing any perfume) and they told me then it was a problem. You might get a rude response, but no more than many non-smokers have to put up with.

YES! The very reason why smoking in public has been proposed in some countries to be banned is because of the effect it can cause to the health of people around you (smokers). I suppose that the policy being intruduced is not really a total ban on smoking. Instead, it only confine smoking to your private residences. Hence, you are not banned from smoking only this time, you have to do it other than in public places. This policy on banning smoking is actually beneficial and I don't see any sound reason why it shouldn't be approved.

Im a smoker and I'm all for the ban because it wont be long before there is a ban on smoking anywhere outwith your own home and I am very curious to see whether after this they will still target smokers or if they will start a witch hunt against another group?

Good point but someone's perfume or b/o doesnt cause cancer or other respiratory complaints.I am all for liberty and freedom but the fact is when someone smokes near me I breathe in that smoke against my will, so where has my freedom gone? There should be special ventilated rooms in public places for smokers so that they can continue their habit without harming others.Come on people we are educated now - we all know that smoking is a bad habit.More fool to anyone who starts smoking with all the info that we are given!

There is a big diffrence between second hand smoke and perfume. Perfume isn't dangerous unless you are highly allergic. Second hand smoke kills and causes all sorts of health problems. People that don't smoke usually don't want to breathe that junk in.
Now if you are allergic to a certain perfume or aftershave then it would be your right to stay away from it or ask someone nicely to move.

If I wore aftershave or cologne, I might be offended. But as I am almost totally anosmic, I routinely wash with deodorising soaps, and as a result I leave a scent trail a bloodhound would likely find it hard to pick up.

The good news is ... the last thing you'll /ever/ hear from me is a complaint that somebody smells.

Think about it.

I am a smoker trying to give up.
I have got emphysema, asthma, and a total of 3 blocked coronary arteries, that give me trouble and will probably kill me,
I wish I could teach every person on earth to not smoke.
Understand that if the pressure to nt smoke was then what it is now, maybe I wouldn't be so ill.
Suck it in pal, ad listen to what people are saying.

There is a difference between something being obnoxious ( a subjective view) and something being harmful ( a factual view)

So aftershave or perfume that you dont like tough i am afraid you have aright to be offended they have a right to like it. You dont have a right to harm them and they dont have a right to harm you.

Your feelings are not actually hurting you its how you interpret them that causes you issues. If however you are being poisoned then you are actually being hurt.

I have no sympathy for others who think its their right to hurt other people.

I am a smoker myself:I think its pretty good to ban smoking in a lot of places.I totally agree.
But to ask a person to leave or wash, when you do not like their smell? No frigging way.You could leave yourself.Next:in the bus some one has a bad body smell.Do you ask them to leave the bus then?Don,t you take it too far?
No way,you can ask that of a person.
So my answer is:no!
Another one:can you ask drivers of cars to stop driving them, cause the fumes stink?l rather see them stopped!!!!!!!!!I guess you drive a car yourself:get rid of it.Thanks.
