Probably because more people die from poor eating and exercise habits (heart disease) each year, than from smoking (lung cancer).
-------------------
Fact:
"Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a preventable disease that kills more than 110,000 people in England every year. More than 1.4 million people suffer from angina and 275,000 people have a heart attack annually. CHD is the biggest killer in the country. The Government is committed to reducing the death rate from coronary heart disease and stroke and related diseases in people under 75 by at least 40% (to 83.8 deaths per 100,000 population) by 2010. Fact:
Cardiovascular disease (CVD), including heart disease and stroke, remains the leading cause of death in the United States despite improvements in prevention, detection, and treatment. CVD is no longer thought of as a disease that primarily affects men as they age. It is a killer of people in the prime of life, with more than half of all deaths occurring among women.

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of disability among working adults. Stroke alone accounts for the disability of more than a million Americans. The economic impact on the health system grows larger as the population ages. In 2001, the estimated cost of health care expenditures and lost productivity attributable to cardiovascular diseases was $298 billion.

I could go on and on, but being unhealthy is the leading cause of health related deaths, causing billions of dollars each year.

some people think everytime somebody in the world gets sick it costs them, , , obesity is a target of medical problems just like smoking.

obesity in itself is not a problem unless there are complications such as high blood pressure, , , which could be likely.

smoking is overated propaganda and harms no one, , , second hand smoke isnt even noticed unless pointed out by witchunters, it is an attempt (and successful) to cover up the influx of cancer caused by nuclear tests in the 50s.

i smoke, it may kill me, im old enough to die anyway and if i was gonna be scared of something id be more scared of the masked gunmen roaming around my neighborhood. but thats silly too.

Its the latest media hype. However considering the billions made on the diet industry, the medical profession and the insurance companies, not to mention the specialty market for larger cars, furniture, clothing and shoes, I'd say obesity is good for the economy.

Obese people incur higher health costs thru their lifetiime because they typically suffer from diabetes, heart disease and cancer, high blood pressure at a highter rate than some one who is at a healthy weight.
They cost more because of the drugs, office visits , missed time from work, and hospital visits.
Nothing personal just the facts.

heart attacks, breaking of benches, being slow at everything apart from eating, using more cloth to make clothes but costing the same amount so who makes up the shortfall. taking up more space on planes taims automobiles. at least smokers pay high tax.
