Sun (suns), moons, planets, and stars are the things made up the universe (or as the human's eyes can see is the solar system). Yes, a sun is similar as a star. Star and sun both can release their own light and heat; while planets and moons can't. However, when the sun's light and heat are out---eventually it would become a blackhole (it depends on the sun's size, thought); a star without its heat and light won't become a blackhole as the sun.

These is a fission reaction taking place helium and helium to form hydrogen and hydrogen and hydrogen to form carbon.
And so the cycle continues for all stars with a mixture of other gases.
In the end the by product being carbon and the nuclear core collapsing ... dead star..
The rest is history in the making !!

If my memory serves me well, a star is celestial body that not only emmits light, but produces it. and that well describes the sun so far.
