Due to family circumstances I have had to relocate to another area and subsequently cant attend work. I have been signed off by a doctor for two weeks. Is it ok for me to hand in my notice whist I am signed off as I cannot go back to work and cannot get signed of for a longer period of time.

I would be very grateful for any help anyone can provide.

Thanks

You can hand in your notice - they might even pay you off for the rest of your notice period!

You should try and maintain good relations with them - ring up, or go in and speak to your line manager. Stress the fact that it is not the job, that it is family circumstances, that you will miss working there (all that rubbish!), and that you are grateful for the opportunities you have had with them.

After all, you never know when you'll need a reference!!

yeah, no worries. Sick or not it is still employment time which will qualify for notice. Either that or just don't tell them! What are they gonna do?

Also if you dont tell them they can NOT give you a bad reference, nobody can! References are questions answered thats all... Move and be in control of your life. No matter what any contract says you can do what ever you want. Its a free world and its only work after all.

Good luck in your new house/life!

I did this when I was in my last job I left when I was on the sick and nothing was said to me I don't think they can say anything especially if the sick note is from your doctor and not a self sert one. I just told my last job that I didn't know how long I was going to be on the sick for and didn't think it was fare them holding open my position when they could give the job to someone else.. Good luck and like I said I don't think they can say anything to you

I would speak to your manager at least that way you will get all monies owed to you. If you just send your notice in it wont look very good.

Yes you can. Do you still have holidays to take get your company to use this as your notice but you should do this as soon as possible.

you can hand your notice in at any time, but if i was your boss and you told me why I would be reporting your doctor for dubious sickness signing..............

Read your contract, it should tell you what is and what is not acceptable. Companies vary, mine does not allow this.
