If you're looking for recently published book, you can try the file-sharing and bittorrent sites, but you probably can't legally get it for free. Try requesting the book at your local library. Even if they don't have it at your branch, there's a good chance another library does and your branch can order it for you through interlibrary loan.

As for legal places you can read books for free:

There's project Gutenberg:

These are books that are in the public domain, so most of the books are at least decades old, but it's a great source for classic literature.
