Ladies don't say he's dreamy. I just don't see it. Put him on the Devil Rays. Does he do any better there? No I don't think so. Is it because he's surrounded by Stienbreners hired guns? Maybe so. This is not a Yankee bashing question. Just curious. I played the game for 22 years so don't say I don't know what I'm talking about. I've seen better hitting and fielding shortstops. Don't get me wrong, he is a good, not great player.

I'm going to add three names here. Cal Ripkin, Barry Larken, Ozzie Smith. All better than Jeter, but not the same pub.

This one is easy. Derek Jeter is the perfect baseball player. His #1 phrase to Torre is 'Okay Coach'. He never complains, he plays hurt, he almost never goes through a slump, he makes miracles happen on the field, he's good with the press, he loves kids, he's not married - that's good for the women, he's not ugly - that's good for everyone, and he's not screwing up off the field (like he's not mixed up in drugs, steroids, a crazy girlfriend, or something like that) and let's face it - he could be making more than A-Rod, but never asked for it - he felt like what he makes (which is considerable anyway) was good enough. As far as baseball goes he's the best. If I had to cut the entire Yankees team, I wouldn't cut Jeter unless he tried to kill me. He's that good of a player and person (at least that is what is percieved).

Vinnie - I'm not a Yankees fan at all, but I don't think you're giving Jeter enough credit. First off, he's not just a good player - he's a guy who's going to end up in the Hall of Fame with 3,000 hits and a .300 career batting average. He's also a consumate pro, a guy who always plays hard, and who you never hear anything negative about off the field.

As for your comparison with Ozzie Smith - are you kidding? I know the Wizard is the greatest defensive shortstop ever, but look at the difference in their offense: Jeter's average (.317 to .262) and OBP (.388 to .337) are hugely higher, and Jeter actually has power. For his career, Ozzie's slugging percentage was lower than his OBP because of his pitiful 28 homers, while Jeter already has about 200 homers and a healthy slugging percentage of over .450.

Jeter might not be my favorite player, but he's still a Hall of Famer.

Jeter is a class act all the way and a "true" Yankee, unlike most of his teamates. He does what he is supposed to do, night in and night out, without ever making excuses or not giving 100% percent. He avoids controversy, which is hard to do as a Yankee, and he's one of the best short stops in the game. Moreso than that, he's a proven winner who can play in the clutch. Remember, he was leading the Yankees before it became "buy a championship", back when they had guys like Paul O'Neil and such.

The best part, he's not even in the top 5 paid players on his own team, despite being the captain and BEST player they have.

ok Ripken wasnt a better hitter than Jeter and he didnt have the speed, Jeter is clutch whenever you need him to come up big he does, oh like diving into the stands to go after a foul ball falling 3 rows into the stands busting his head and still making the catch and there is the time when Jeter saw the throw coming to the plate was off he ran over there got the ball and shot putted it to the catcher and got the out, these are soem reasons Jeter is so will liked because he comes through in the big game at the big times.......I mean come on the 1st game against the Tigers 5 for 5 2 singles 2 doubles and a home run the guy is a big time player who plays BIG

OK, first let me tell you that I am a Red Sox fan. While I don't "like" Jeter, I do respect him and think he is one of the best short stops ever. As for the 3 you mentioned. Jeter is definitely better than Ozzie Smith (maybe not as a fielder, but as a hitter). Larkin and Ripkin maybe (and I say mabe because I am not sure) better fielders, but Jeter is better offensively than either. On top of that, he has all the intangibles, he knows how to just play and just win. He is clutch. I think Jeter is the best short stop I have seen in my lifetime (36).

I think it is only in New York that he is so populat. I am sure other teams think their shortstops are just as good. I respect him mostly because he plays hard, is good., and seems to have a clean living life.

Because he is a true professional of the game. No matter what team he would be on. Class act all the way.

Yeah right Vinnie. You should probably pull your head out of your asc. Batting .390 with runner in scoring position is GREAT and I guess you haven't seen his highlight reel of defensive plays.

I don't think he is particularly well liked but more respected and admired for his abilities. Let's put him in skates on on a rink with pads and a stick and see how well he does!
