M car had been overheating for a few days now, i opened the bonnet today to see the tail end of a rat disappear somewhere into the engine, my car radio has already stopped working i suspect the overheating is due to the rat chewing my coolant hoses, but still need to get that pesky rodent out of there

Open the hood and let a cat get 'em.
Either that or just start the car to try to scare them out and/or kill them.

when you say rats out of your engine, i presume you mean the engine bay, chew'd wires etc?

rat poison usually works, just leave some on a flat part of the engine bay where they can get to it.

sometimes a long drive will get rid of them.

Get some smelly cheese and place it close to the engine... when the guy comes out, start the engine and he'll be off in a jiffy...

Get the RSPA to give your vehicle an MOT and service.
If as I suspect, you mean 'rattles', get the vehicle fully serviced at a good motor repairers.
