Press menu, preferences, OK
select 5 A/V control OK
select 5 display format press >
select 16:9, 14:9 or centre cut out. I have 14:9 OK
Press Exit.

If that doesn't work. It has a fault. Unplug from the mains and wait 5 minutes and plug it back in and it will reset. If that doesn't fix it. Take it back it's faulty. Any problem with it unplugging it from the mains for a bit - usually fixes it. They are really good - especially the time shift. Depends on the model. Mine may be a different model - they keep improving them. But this was the latest model in 2004 - it had just come out. You need a good aerial to tune it too. mine needs retuning. I have Film 4 showing as an old channel - works OK - just confusing! Actually, mine uses about 1.5 Gb per hour - some of the better ones only use 300K - but I'm not sure what the picture quality is like. I have DVB on my laptop and i changed the Mpeg and the file size is 1/3 of what is was - but not a good picture.
But the Humax is great - just press pause when you go to the loo or make a cup of tea and you pick up where you left off after! You can also fast forward through the adverts. I used to transfer video to VCR too - until a power cut - knackered my VCR. You can also program it to switch off and save power at night. The PIN is 0000 by default - if you haven't figured that out. If you change it - don't forget it.

you need to set the default view ie: 16/9 4/3.. in the menu, and it should stay like it.. some freeview channels do go to 4/3 on changing though... and you have a 'wide' button on remote for that..
