Visit the Bank and inform the clerk that you wish to close your account.

If you have been a good customer, they will do their best to keep you. They may even offer you some incentive to stay with them.

If, however, you have been a problem customer, they might say straight off, "Certainly Sir/Madam"!!!

If you want to transfer to another Bank, there are procedures in place that allow you to do this 'painlessly'.

Good luck. Let's know what you decide.

don't close it, having a current account doesn't cost anything and you may want to use it in the future. just leave 20 pounds in there.

it may be useful to be able to show you have had a bank account for a number of years, eg on a credit check or reference.

Take your card into Barclays, ask to close the account. They should give you the remaining balance, or ask you to pay the remaning debit (if it is overdrawn) and close the account. You may find they will ask you why you are closing the account, and possibly try and sell you other things in the meantime, but that's just their way of showing they are sad to be losing your custom.

Take all the money out of it and go and see your branmch and tell them you want to close the account.

You may need to take proof of id (driving license, passport etc ...) with you.

I think if you go to most banks and say you want to close your account they will give you all the money thats in there - you may have to accept a cheque from them if there is quite a lot of money in your account.

Ensure there are no outstanding dealings on the account write to them expressing what you want to do enclose (cut up) all cards related to your account & drop a letter to your local bank to cover your sent letter to head office.

It's really very easy. You simply need to visit your branch, withdraw all the funds in the account, and tell them you would like to close the account.

You either call or go direct to the branch. They will probably want to know why you want to close the account (so they can persuade you to stay!) You will need some sort of ID.

I'm in this process myself. I simply informed my new bank I wished to do this and they sent me a form to authorise them to do everything for me. All I had to do was tick boxes and sign my name. You pay bank charges! so why not let them do the work...especially if you live outside the U.K. and cannot personally walk into nearest Barclays' and speak to someone..If I lived abroad I would get onto the Web and contact them direct.
